The Ultimate Moving Day Checklist: Nothing Left Behind
March 20, 2026 · 5 min read
The weeks before a move are hectic enough. Moving day itself should run like clockwork if you've prepared properly. Use this checklist to make sure nothing falls through the cracks.
Two Weeks Before
Confirm your moving date and time with the company. Start using up perishable food. Arrange mail forwarding. Notify your bank, employer, and subscriptions of your new address.
One Week Before
Pack a 'first-night box' with essentials: toiletries, phone chargers, medications, a change of clothes, basic kitchen items, and important documents. This box goes with you, not on the truck.
The Day Before
Defrost the freezer. Charge all devices. Lay out clothes for tomorrow. Confirm arrival time with the movers. Put valuables and documents in your car.
Morning of Moving Day
Do a final walkthrough of every room, including closets, attic, and storage. Check behind appliances. Remove remaining wall hooks and fill holes if required by your lease.
During the Move
Stay available to answer questions from the crew. Do a walk-through with the team leader before the truck departs. Take meter readings at both properties.
At the New Home
Check that utilities are connected. Direct movers to place boxes in the correct rooms. Inspect furniture as it comes off the truck and note any damage immediately.
After the Move
Unpack the first-night box. Set up beds and the bathroom first. Change the locks — you don't know who has copies of the previous keys. Register at your new address within 20 days.
